Deposit Limits, Reality Checks and Time-Outs: Using the Tools
Every UK-licensed slot site has a “safer gambling” or “responsible gambling” section in the account menu. The tools there are free, immediate and — for most players — the single most useful feature on the site. Here’s what each does, how it behaves, and how to set them sensibly.
Deposit limits
Cap what you can deposit per day, week or month. Most sites now ask you to set one at sign-up.
How to set it. Use your bankroll figure from your monthly budget, not a round number picked on the spot. If you plan £100 a month, set £100 a month — not £25 a day, which allows £750. Daily limits are the loosest of the three; monthly limits are the most protective.
How it behaves. Decreasing the limit takes effect immediately. Increasing it usually requires a 24-hour cooling-off period, and on some sites longer. That asymmetry is deliberate and regulated: the tool is designed to resist the impulse to raise it mid-session.
Gross deposit limits. From 30 September 2026, licensed operators must offer a gross deposit limit — a cap on total money in, regardless of what you’ve withdrawn. If a site previously offered only a net limit (deposits minus withdrawals), look for the new option.
Loss limits
Some operators offer a net-loss limit: you can keep playing with winnings but can’t lose more than the figure over the period. When available, this offers a closer match to how most people think about their budget than a deposit limit. A good early win doesn’t simply get recycled into a larger loss.
Session and time limits
You can also set a limit on how long you stay logged in each day or session. This helps if time, rather than money, causes problems. Long sessions at small stakes can still add up. Time on the reels also takes time away from other things.
Reality checks
A pop-up at intervals you choose — every 15, 30 or 60 minutes — showing time played and net win/loss, with an option to continue or stop. Slots can make time disappear. A reality check interrupts that cycle and shows you the real numbers. Set it shorter than you think you need. Fifteen minutes feels intrusive for about two sessions and then becomes normal.
Time-outs
Lock your account for 24 hours, 48 hours, a week, or a month. No deposits, no play, no reversal. Useful after a bad session, after a big win you want to bank rather than replay, or simply to test whether you miss it.
Self-exclusion
A longer lock — six months minimum — with the operator, or across all UK sites via GAMSTOP (see our GAMSTOP Explained guide). Cannot be undone early.
Play history
Every licensed site must let you see your deposits, withdrawals and net position over time. Look at it once a month. It’s the most honest number you’ll see about your gambling, and it’s usually a surprise the first time.

Setting them without feeling like it’s a problem
Using these tools doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It’s the equivalent of a spending cap on a night out or a savings pot you can’t dip into. The best time to set them is when you’re calm, before a session, with your budget in front of you — not after a loss, when the number will either be punitive or, more commonly, quietly generous.
A suggested starting setup
- Monthly deposit limit = monthly entertainment budget, set once and left alone.
- Reality check every 30 minutes (15 if sessions tend to run long).
- Play history reviewed on the 1st of each month.
- Time-out used reflexively after any session that ends badly — 24 hours is enough to reset.
Five minutes of setup, and every session after that runs inside guardrails you chose while thinking clearly.
If setting a limit feels difficult, that’s worth noticing. GambleAware and GamCare are free and confidential.
